Student Requirements for Clinical Practicum
Required Observation Hours
The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) requires graduate students to complete 25 clinical observation hours prior to providing services to clients. To meet this requirement, graduate students must submit signed documentation of observations which includes the following for each session observed:
- Type of session observed (e.g., treatment, evaluation)
- Diagnosis (e.g., dysphagia, developmental language disorder)
- Signature and ASHA identification number of supervising speech-language pathologist (SLP)
Required Professional Liability Insurance
All graduate students must obtain professional liability insurance for students prior to providing services to clients. The insurance purchase must include at least one year of coverage to prevent expiration expire during your graduate program. Additionally, coverage must include 100,000,000 per incident and 300,000,000 per aggregate. Professional liability insurance can be purchased from various companies including Proliability and American Professional Agency but must meet the aforementioned requirements. Prices will vary by the insurance company.
