How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?
Majoring in English with a focus in Journalism prepared me for a career as a reporter and my current career in communications. It was a major stepping stone in the jobs I’ve held over the years. It taught me the importance of finding the true story in my reporting, how to interview people, and how to design publications. Most recently, it allowed me to pursue and complete a master’s degree in Writing and Digital Communication.
How has majoring in English enriched your life?
Majoring in English opened many doors. I began my career as a newspaper reporter, but I’ve had the opportunity to work with different types of media outlets. I worked as an associate producer at a television news station. I pulled together information and designed magazines at a commercial real estate publication. I also continued my newspaper reporting at two newspapers in the metro Atlanta area. Ultimately, the positions I held over the years led me to make a career change and work in government communications. I am know able to apply the knowledge I’ve learned in my previous roles in my current job.
What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?
Be sure being a reporter is what you really want to do. The pay was very low in the beginning and the hours were long. However, I would not trade that experience. I met a lot of great people and covered a lot of noteworthy and memorable stories. If you work hard and are a true journalist at heart, you will make a difference in the communities you’re reporting about. Always tell the truth and write based on facts. True journalism is alive and well.
