In connection with my duties at Valdosta State University, what should I do if I receive a legal document such as a summons, lawsuit, or a subpoena?
You should call the Office of Legal Affairs immediately, and provide us with a copy of the document(s). Upon receipt of the document(s), this office will instruct you as to what actions are necessary.
In connection with my duties at Valdosta State University, should I sign a document/agreement on behalf of the University?
Only certain individuals within the University system have contractual authority. You should not sign any agreements/contracts on behalf of the University without prior authorization. The Office of Legal Affairs assists all departments with contract review, drafting and negotiation services. As such, proposed contracts should be forwarded to this office for review.
In connection with my duties at Valdosta State University, what should I do if an attorney contacts me?
If an attorney contacts you, you should contact the office immediately and further inform the attorney that he/she should likewise contact this office.
In connection with my duties at Valdosta State University, what should I do if I receive a request under the Georgia Open Records Act?
You should contact this office immediately and likewise contact the University records custodian. Upon receipt of the document the request will be handled appropriately.

E-mail is not confidential and is subject to disclosure under the Georgia Open Records Act.
Does the Office of Legal Affairs provide legal advice to students, and employees with regard to personal matters unrelated to the University?
No. The Office of Legal Affairs supports the mission of institution in its endeavors, and as such is designed to address only those matters related to Valdosta State University.
