VSU Fine Art Gallery Hosts Unpredictable, Collaborative Exhibit Through Oct. 11

VALDOSTA — Jon Swindler and Mike McFalls share certain inherent formal traits as studio artists, but they differ widely when it comes to processes, ideas, and motives. The two began collaborating about four years ago, employing a cross-disciplinary approach to their artistic creations.

Valdosta State University’s Dedo Maranville Fine Arts Gallery hosts an exhibit of their unpredictable sprawling arrangements combining sculpture, painting, printmaking, and other sorted media and materials through Friday, Oct. 11. The exhibition is called Some Things Left: A Collaborative Installation. 

“In many of their collaborations, remnants from the previous works are combined with elements from each of their respective individual studio practices,” shared Julie Bowland, gallery director. “These combinations often reveal themselves as massive, composed piles of art material that serve as both repository and resource for their installations.”  

Swindler is an associate professor of art and associate director of the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art and art education from Fort Hays State University and a Master of Fine Arts in studio art from Southern Illinois University.

McFalls is a professor of art at Columbus State University and director of Pasaquan, an internationally recognized visionary art environment. He is a practicing artist who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Columbus College of Arts and Design in Ohio and a Master of Fine Arts from The University of California at Davis.

The Dedo Maranville Fine Arts Gallery is located on the first floor of VSU’s Fine Arts Building, at the intersection of Brookwood Drive and Oak Street. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. Admission is free of charge and open to the public.
