Justin Capers, Kennedy Robinson Crowned Homecoming King, Queen

Justin C. Capers and Kennedy B. Robinson are Valdosta State University’s Homecoming 2016 king and queen.

VALDOSTA — Justin C. Capers and Kennedy B. Robinson are Valdosta State University’s Homecoming 2016 king and queen. Elected by their peers, the two were crowned during halftime festivities at the Blazers vs. Delta State University Statesmen football game — a game the Blazers won 56-27.

“Becoming Valdosta State University’s Homecoming king has to be one of the greatest accomplishments I have had as an undergraduate student,” said Capers, of Warner Robins. “The sole reason I chose to run was because of my fellow students, who believed that we could change the title into a position that promoted and advocated for the student body. Their belief in making a lasting difference on this campus fueled my campaign all the way to the finish line, and now we can work to make this idea a reality. I am excited and ready to get to work.”

Capers is president of the Black Student League, vice president of the Mu Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and secretary of the National Pan-Hellenic Council at VSU. He has been a member of the Blazin’ Brigade for the past four years, serving as drum major for three years. He is a member of Sigma Alpha Pi: The National Society of Leadership and Success and Kappa Kappa Psi and served on VSU’s Homecoming 2016 and Black History Month 2016 planning committees. He represented Blazer Nation as a study abroad ambassador in Cadiz, Spain, where he served as a CEPA Summer Camp mentor. He has also mentored students at Valdosta Early College Academy and through such organizations as Lowndes Associated Ministries to People Inc. and Heart2Heart. He has performed with the VSU Chamber Singers and Spotlighters and been a member of Future Business Leaders of America.     

Capers plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration in international business, with a minor in music, in May 2017. He wants to work in the federal government and eventually attend law school.

Robinson plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in public relations, with a minor in African American studies and nutrition, in December 2017. She wants to work as a flight attendant and then continue her studies at Florida State University, with a focus on eventually becoming a dietician. She was inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, Alpha Lambda Delta: National Honor Society for First-Year Students, Alpha Chi, and Sigma Alpha Pi: The National Society of Leadership and Success. She serves as event chairwoman for SUCCESS Mentors, fundraising chairwoman for the Theta Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, a Greek ambassador, a VSU ambassador, a member of Habitat for Humanity and Collegiate Women of VSU, and student assistant for Housing and Residence Life. 

“Having the honor and blessing to be able to be this year’s Homecoming queen means the world, yet also a position I do not plan on taking lightly,” said Robinson, of Cartersville. “The whole journey of campaigning and getting to know people was extremely exciting and taught me so much. My goal is to really be a tool to the student body in any way I can, as well as be a motivation to others. Go after that which seems difficult and impossible. You can do anything, especially with God on your side. Thank you so much again for this opportunity, Blazers.”
