VSU Presents Critical Issues in Criminal Justice Seminar Series

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University’s Criminal Justice Outreach Program is hosting a six-part Critical Issues in Criminal Justice Seminar Series.

All VSU faculty, staff, students, retirees, alumni, and friends of the university are welcome to attend and may register online. Advance online registration is $300 for general admission, $150 for VSU alumni, and $75 for a current VSU student, faculty, or staff. Onsite registration will be available for an additional fee of $50. Registration includes breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

The Criminal Justice Outreach Program is supported by a 2016-2017 VSU Innovation Fund Grant. The Innovation Fund was created to invest in the future of VSU by supporting innovative practices, programs, and approaches that continue to improve teaching, services, and support of VSU students. 

“We want seminar attendees to gain knowledge on various topics in the criminal justice system through hands-on experience and give them the opportunity to collaborate with others in the field and potential students,” said Dr. Bobbie Ticknor, criminal justice faculty member.  

Seminar Topics

Correctional Rehabilitation
Oct. 28: This seminar will explore the various treatment strategies available for use in correctional settings as well as practical methods for application.

Court Sentencing Decisions
Dec. 2: This seminar will explore various aspects of court decision making with specific emphasis on sentencing and wrongful convictions.

Forensic Investigations
Feb. 3, 2017: This seminar will explore key elements of forensic investigation, the current trends in forensic investigation, and possible future advances in forensic investigations.

Re-Entry: Adult and Juvenile
March 31, 2017: This seminar will explore a variety of topics related to adult and juvenile reentry, including the evaluation of reentry programs.

Technology in Policing
May 12, 2017: This seminar will explore the use of technology in policing to improve execution of officer duties, as well the enhancement of community relations.

Diversion Programs
June 30, 2017: This seminar will explore diversion programs by means of specialty courts and restorative justice initiatives.

Attendees will have the opportunity to earn continuing education unit credits. Each seminar will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at VSU.
