Social Work Program at VSU Ranked Among Most Affordable in the Nation

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University offers one of the most affordable Master of Social Work degree programs in the nation, according to Best Social Work Programs and OnlineU.

To determine its rankings, Best Social Work Programs analyzed data from New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeastern United States-based institutions of higher education offering an accredited Master of Social Work degree. A total of 50 colleges and universities made the final cut for the 2016 Most Affordable Accredited Master of Social Work Programs in the East rankings. VSU came in at No. 7.

OnlineU’s 2016 Most Affordable Online Colleges by Degree rankings feature the 14 most affordable accredited, not-for-profit institutions of higher education in the United States offering at least one degree in social work online. VSU came in at No. 3.

Dr. Mizanur R. Miah, professor and head of the Department of Social Work, said that he is proud to be able to offer a Master of Social Work program that is both affordable and well respected across the country. U.S. News and World Report has previously named VSU’s program among the best in the nation through its reputation-based Best Graduate Schools rankings.

"This national ranking makes us very proud about our program,” Miah explained. “It gives us renewed confidence in the quality of our program and also creates public confidence in VSU’s social work program. This was possible because of our highly qualified faculty and their dedication. I know our students, faculty, staff, and numerous alums were delighted when they heard the news.  I personally feel very gratified to be a part of such a prestigious program that has received high national acclamation."

Fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, VSU’s Department of Social Work offers a Master of Social Work program that focuses on multi-level, advanced generalist practice. Students learn about both clinical and community practice and are able to develop the requisite skills to practice in many settings, from schools to hospitals, law enforcement to hospice. Students in the program can attend classes on campus full time or part time, or they can take advantage of an innovative web-based program that requires them to meet face-to-face only a few weekends each semester.

VSU’s Department of Social Work is located in the Health Sciences and Business Administration Building. It is one of nine departments that comprise the James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services.
