VSU Remembers Martin Luther King Jr. with Day of Service

VALDOSTA – The Office of Social Equity at Valdosta State University will host service opportunities from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Participants will unpack, sort, and restock items at Second Harvest of South Georgia, located at 1411 Harbin Circle. The deadline to register is 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it best when he asked, ‘What are you doing for others?’ [We] encourage students to take this day off and give back to the city of Valdosta,” said Carmen Guess, graduate assistant in the Office of Social Equity.

In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves everyone closer to King's vision of a nation of freedom and justice for all, a nation where all citizens live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live. It  is a part of United We Serve, the president's national call to service initiative that encourages Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to the most pressing national problems.
