VSU Offers After-School Enrichment Opportunities for Kids
VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University is offering after-school enrichment opportunities for community boys and girls in the elementary grades through its Regional Center for Continuing Education. Classes start Tuesday, Jan. 26, and will run through the month of April.
Camp Discovery: After-School Edition is an outgrowth of Camp Discovery, an annual summer day camp program offered through VSU Continuing Education that provides enrichment opportunities for area children and teenagers. The first after-school classes were offered during the 2015 spring semester.
“The response to this service has been great,” said Suzanne Ewing, program coordinator with VSU Continuing Education. “We are very excited to once again offer this after-school enrichment opportunity and hope it continues to meet the needs of the community.”
The Camp Discovery: After-School Edition lineup features the following classes:
• Awesome Artists After School: This class is for boys and girls in kindergarten through third grade who want to make new friends while they learn about painting, sculpture, crafts, and more. It will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and offers three blocks (or sessions), each with its own projects so students can take the class more than once. The first block will meet Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, 9, and 16. The second block will meet Feb. 23 and March 1, 8, and 15. The third block will meet April 5, 12, 19, and 26. Tuition is $69 per block.
• Crazy Science After School: This class is for boys and girls in kindergarten through third grade who want to look at the world through the eyes of a scientist as they learn some basic principles of biology, chemistry, and physics. It will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays and offers three blocks (or sessions), each with its own projects so students can take the class more than once. The first block will meet Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, 11, and 18. The second block will meet Feb. 25 and March 3, 10, and 17. The third block will meet April 7, 14, 21, and 28. Tuition is $69 per block.
• Fun With Food After School: This class is for boys and girls in third through fifth grade who want to learn a little nutrition, mathematics, and chemistry as they have fun measuring, mixing, and decorating their own edible treats. It will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and offers two blocks (or sessions), each with its own projects so students can take it more than once. The first block will meet Feb. 23 and March 1, 8, 15. The second block will meet April 5, 12, 19, 26. Tuition is $75 per block.
Each enrichment opportunity will feature lots of hands-on activities. A small snack will be served each day; kids in the food class will make their own snacks.
Discounts are available for children of VSU faculty, staff, and students.
Transportation is not provided.
VSU Continuing Education will host Camp Discovery: Spring Break Edition March 28 through April 1. Morning, afternoon, and all-day programing is available for ages 5 to 11. More information about this enrichment opportunity will be announced soon.
