Dr. James A. Muncy Named A Governor’s Teaching Fellow

VALDOSTA — Dr. James “Jim” A. Muncy is representing Valdosta State University at the 2014-2015 Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program offered through the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia.

Established by former Gov. Zell Miller, the Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program provides higher education faculty members from accredited public and private colleges and universities across Georgia with expanded opportunities for developing important teaching skills. Throughout the academic year, Muncy will attend six three-day symposia that include a combination of structured instructional and faculty development activities as well as self-directed activities designed to meet his individual needs. He will also receive the support necessary to engage in instructional improvement projects at VSU.

“We are learning the very latest research and practices in creating an active learning environment,” said Muncy, a professor in the Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration’s Department of Marketing and International Business. “This includes participating in learning experiences, designing our own learning experiences, and seeing presentations from various people in their areas of expertise. We also get a substantial amount of interaction with other fellows so we can learn from their experience and knowledge, too.”

A total of 13 associate, assistant, and full professors were named fellows and selected to participate in this year’s Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program’s Academic Year Symposia Program. They represent Georgia Regents University, Georgia Perimeter College, Emmanuel College, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, the University of North Georgia, the University of West Georgia, Young Harris College, Wesleyan College, Mercer University, and Georgia Southern University.

Participants were selected on the basis of their teaching experience, their interest in continuing instructional and professional development, their ability to make a positive impact on their own campus, and a strong commitment by their home institution for release time and other forms of support for the duration of their participation in the program.

“I knew that the very best college and university teachers from around the state would be attending,” said Muncy, who saw the program as an opportunity to better himself as a person and educator and to use that knowledge to better VSU.

Muncy earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in psychology and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in marketing from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He is considered an expert in sales, consumer behavior, marketing education, and social and ethical issues in marketing and enjoys speaking to business and nonprofit organizations about success, sales, time management and people skills. He has contributed numerous articles to professional publications, presented at conferences across the country and abroad, and is a member of the Editorial Review Board for Psychology and Marketing. He published A Few Keys To All Success: Discovering The Best Person I Can Become in 2002 and will celebrate the release of his latest book, Time Basics, with a reception and book signing from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, in VSU’s Health Sciences and Business Administration Building.
