Women of Diversity Hosts Domestic Violence Awareness Forum Oct. 30

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University’s Women of Diversity will host a Domestic Violence Awareness Forum from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, in the University Center Theatre. The forum is open to all VSU students, faculty, and staff.

A panel of experts will answer questions and discuss domestic violence as it relates to men, women, marriage, and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning community. Guests representing student organizations will also share personal experiences with domestic violence.

Mercedes Harbert, chairwoman of the Women of Diversity Morals and Ethics Committee, said “A huge cliché with domestic violence is that it only happens to women, and that is simply not true. We've had potential co-hosts ask if this event will be geared towards women, and it will not.

“We are trying to reach out to everyone and provide everyone with information and a sort of safe haven to discuss this topic regardless of gender, race, sex, religion, etc. We hope they walk away with a better understanding of domestic violence and who it affects. Our goal is to provide insight to our guests on domestic violence. We would like to reach as broad a spectrum of people as possible.”

The purpose of Women of Diversity is to work in sync to collaboratively promote diversity and equality amongst the collegiate women of Valdosta State University.
