College of the Arts Pinks Out Whitehead Auditorium Oct. 23

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts will recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a one-night performance event — Pink Showcase: A Celebration of Breast Cancer Survivors — at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, on the Whitehead Auditorium stage. Admission is free of charge and open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to wear pink.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global effort to raise awareness of the disease and the importance of early detection, as well as funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. An estimated one in eight women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women.

Pink Showcase: A Celebration of Breast Cancer Survivors features performances by Department of Music and Department of Communication Arts faculty and students, including Kelsey South, Chéla Michele North, Dr. Joren Cain, David Springfield, Maila Gutierrez Springfield, Michael Hadary, Dr. Carol Mikkelsen, William Stanley, Blake Fountain, and Dr. Lynn Corbin with the VSU Women’s Choir.

Mikkelsen and Corbin are both breast cancer survivors.

The Pink Showcase: A Celebration of Breast Cancer Survivors program also features two guest speakers, Dr. Vanessa A. Jones, an instructor of nursing in the VSU College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and Brian Sayre, a chaplain and manager of pastoral care at South Georgia Medical Center. 

Dr. Carl Cates, associate dean of the College of the Arts, will serve as emcee.

Whitehead Auditorium is located on the first floor of the Fine Arts Building, at the intersection of Brookwood Drive and Oak Street.
