Azalea Health Hackathon to be held at VSU April 19

VALDOSTA - Students with an interest in engineering, design, programming, math and computer science will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in application development during Azalea Health’s Hackathon, to be held at Valdosta State University in Nevins Hall Saturday, April 19 from noon to 8 p.m.

A hackathon is a gathering that allows programmers to work on a particular project over a short period of time – showcasing their coding skills. The April 19 hackathon includes a competition between several teams of students from Valdosta State University and Wiregrass Technical College majoring in various fields. The goal is to develop the most innovative and creative idea or application that meets the requirements of a selected topic, which will be released by Azalea Health at the opening of the event.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to showcase their creativity and talent in software design and programming,” said Dr. Krishnendu Roy, assistant professor of computer science. “Computing is all about creating novel solutions to important problems and thanks to Azalea Health our students now have a platform to explore this. Students participating in this hackathon have a chance to not only create something cool and win substantial prizes for doing so, but also gain valuable experience and get to connect with people from the industry which will help in future job search.”

Azalea Health is awarding a total of $1,750 in prizes for the winners of the hackathon. The first place winning team will be awarded $1,000, second place will receive $500 and third place will receive $250. The teams will have approximately eight hours to develop their applications. When the allotted time has ended, each team will present their ideas and innovations to three judges, who will evaluate and decide the winners.

Refreshments will be catered by Azalea Health and will be available for the teams during the eight-hour event.
