Tuba Euphonium Studio Invited to Perform at International Conference
VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University’s Tuba Euphonium Studio has been invited to perform at the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference May 17-24 at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Ind.
Daniel J. Rowland, tuba euphonium lecturer in the Department of Music, noted, “The studio is extremely honored to have been invited to perform at the conference. This is a fantastic opportunity for the students not only to attend but also to perform at a major international conference.”
Themed “Where It All Began,” Rowland said this year marks the 40th anniversary of the International Tuba Euphonium Conference, which was first formed at this year’s host institution of higher education, Indiana University.
“As such, this conference will be a particularly well-attended conference featuring the world’s absolute best tuba and euphonium players and teachers, some of whom our students may only be able to meet, play for, talk to, and learn from once in their lives,” he added.
In addition to performing at the conference, the 10 students who comprise the VSU Tuba Euphonium Studio will enjoy six days of concerts, recitals, competitions, panel discussions, lectures, and master classes by a number of premier classical and jazz tuba and euphonium artists from around the globe, as well as an extensive exhibit of instruments, mouthpieces, mutes, music, and recordings.
Rowland said his students need to raise $3,000 to $5,000 by early May to be able to travel to Indiana and take advantage of the invitation to perform at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference. They are currently taking orders for baseball-style T-shirts and also selling wristbands. The shirts will be available in April and feature a black, red, and white “Are You In Tune?” logo and cost $15 each, $20 for individuals wanting sizes larger than an extra large. The bands feature a “Music is Life” logo and cost $3 each.
Additional fundraisers include a bake sale in the Fine Arts Building and the Student Union and a car wash or two around town.
Donations may also be made through the VSU Foundation by either mailing a check made payable to VSU Foundation Inc., with College of the Arts/Tuba Euphonium Studio written in the memo line, to 1500 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, Ga., 31698, or by visiting http://www.valdosta.edu/administration/advancement/how-to-give-to-valdosta-state-university.php and designating the donation accordingly.
Rowland said he and his students “are on a mission to showcase the quality of our studio, VSU, and the VSU Department of Music” to the world.
