VSU's Counseling Center Receives Re-accreditation
VALDOSTA - Earlier this September, Valdosta State University's
counseling center became one of only four centers in the University
System of Georgia to receive full accreditation from the
International Association of Counseling Services.
The IACS was established since 1972 in order to inform the public
about counseling services that are competent and reliable. The
organization gave its approval based on evidence of continuing
professional development as well as demonstration of excellence of
counseling performance.
The counseling center provides therapy to students experiencing
personal or psychological tribulations that necessitate
professional attention, teaches learning skills that will
contribute to their short and long-term goals, and fosters a campus
environment that contributes to healthy growth and development of
students.
In order to be eligible for accreditation, a counseling service
must excel in individual and group counseling and therapy services
to students experiencing ongoing or situational psychological or
behavioral problems. They must also have crisis intervention and
emergency coverage, programs focused on developmental needs to
students relating to academics, and consult members of the
university to maintain a balanced community for students. Research
and evaluation of services along with training, professional
development and a full staff are also pertinent.
Counseling Center Director Dr. Vic Morgan said he feels a great
sense of pride and accomplishment to be named one of only four
centers in the University System of Georgia to receive full
accreditation.
"The accreditation is important to us because it enhances our
credibility, status, and reputation on campus and in the University
community," Morgan said. "It helps us to advocate for additional
staff, resources, and facilities, as well as, improving our
relationship with the administration while communicating our needs
and accomplishments."

information.
