VSU Welcomes Students for 29th Annual Governor's Honors Program
VALDOSTA - Students participating in the prestigious Governor’s
Honors Program joined the Valdosta State University campus
community on Sunday, June 8, ready for the learning experience of a
lifetime.
Students will now study under the host of faculty and staff, who
arrived Wednesday June 4, during the annual six-week program, which
allows the state’s most intellectually and artistically talented
high school students to expand their knowledge and experience life
on a college campus.
Students are nominated by their high school teachers in the areas
of study in which they excel, before participating in an interview
process with the GHP faculty and staff. Each must create a
portfolio and presentation for the GHP faculty and staff, who make
the final selections of students to participate in the program for
the summer. Those who earn the opportunity can focus on arts,
science, foreign language, business management or one of many other
specialty areas, tailoring a program to fit specific desires.
The program began with 400 student participants in 1964 at Wesleyan
College in Macon. Successful results allowed for expansion to 600
students and an additional location at North Georgia College and
State University in Dahlonega the following year. In 1980, Valdosta
State University became a new host, before becoming the official
campus for a consolidated program. Each year, VSU welcomes close to
700 students, offering each students opportunity to engage in
innovative learning and experience the atmosphere of a regional
university.
