VSU Host Second Annual Centennial Fun Run

VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University will host the second annual Centennial Fun Run at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, on its campus. Registration will begin at 6:30 a.m.

The yearly event began in 2006 as part of the centennial celebration and integrates the milestone anniversary with an aspect of campus life that effects everyone in the VSU community - wellness. As runners follow the 5K course, they will emphasize the importance of staying active and healthy, while also celebrating the university’s longevity.

VSU’s wellness committee, the leaders for campus wellness, along with Shawn Phippen in Campus Recreation, were responsible for organizing the event, which was sponsored by the Centennial Steering Committee. Todd Smoot, owner of Get Active, provided his expert services in order to create an enjoyable, professional experience. Farber Health Center as well as EMS representatives will be on location to ensure participant safety.

Local running enthusiasts are already practicing on the course that will begin at the West Hall fountain, lead around the university’s perimeter and end back at the fountain. Many have already entered; however, registration will continue until the start of the race. The cost is $15, which will cover entry as well as a t-shirt. Top awards will be presented in both categories, male and female. In addition, the first 15 runners to finish will be entered into a prize raffle.

To pre-register, participants should mail a completed entry form, with cash or a check payable to the VSU Foundation, to Campus Recreation c/o Shawn Phippen, 1500 N Patterson Street, Valdosta, 31698. Entry forms are available at Get Active, located in the Winn-Dixie shopping center at Five Points, as well as Campus Recreation on Sustella Avenue and online at www.valdosta.edu/recreation .
