Poet and Author to speak and sign books at VSU
Valdosta State University’s College of Arts and Sciences, as
part of the President’s Lecture Series, will host a lecture and
book signing for Luci Tapahonso, poet and author, on Wednesday,
March 28, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Hugh C. Bailey Science Center
auditorium. Tapahonso grew up on a Navajo reservation and later
learned English as a second language. After finishing high school,
Tapahonso enrolled in the University of New Mexico, and published
her first collection of poetry while completing her degree. Later
Tapahonso gained international attention with her collection Saánii
Dahataal (the women are singing), written in both English and her
native language.
“Her poetry and stories are moving and lyrical,” Jeanette Lugo,
English instructor, said. “The mixture of English and Navajo, of
song and story, transports you.”
