VSU Hosts GIS Day Open House
The Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences at
Valdosta State University will host Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) Day on November 15, 2006 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the
Atrium of the Bailey Science Center.
The purpose of this event is to showcase real-world applications of
GIS to the community. GIS is a collection of hardware, software,
and geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and
displaying all forms of geographically referenced
information.
GIS Day is a part of Geography Awareness Week, started when
President Ronald Reagan signed legislation in 1987. The purpose of
the awareness week is to educate schools, businesses and the public
on the equipment used to understand geography, such as mapping and
analysis tools that give people a better understanding of the
environment.
GIS Day will be celebrated in more than 70 countries around the
globe and on six different continents. For more information on the
GIS event at VSU contact Dr. Paul Vincent at 229-333-5752 and for
more information on GIS Day visit www.gisday.com .
