Science Seminar focuses on Pascal's Triangle

Valdosta State University will continue its Science Seminar Series with a lecture by Mathematics and Computer Science professor, Dr. Charles Kicey on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at 4 p.m. in Powell Hall. His lecture is entitled Sharing Triangles and Pascal's Triangle.

The lecture will focus on how one or a series of the same incidents determines the future of a state; a classic example is the competition between a predator and prey species, where a large prey population causes the predator population to grow and prey population to decrease. The focus is on a very simple sharing scheme, and a simple solution to its long-term behavior. The proof has a surprising connection to Pascal's triangle.

Pascal's Triangle is a geometric agreement of the binomial coefficients of a triangle, due to the mathematical connection associated with this lecture a minimal mathematical background is assumed.
