Minorities in Europe is subject of spring lectures
Valdosta State University's Center for International Programs
(CIP) is sponsoring a series of lectures and films titled
?Minorities in Europe: Together or Apart.?
The series? goal is to offer the Valdosta community a chance to
become informed on current issues in the world today. ?The series
isn?t geared towards international students, it is intended for all
students and community members who have an interest in the world,?
said David Starling, assistant director VSU's Center for
International Programs.
Starling said this year's series focuses on minority problems in
Europe and specifically how countries in Western Europe are dealing
with a large increase in minority residents.
The following lectures and films are open to public free of
charge:
* Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., in the University Center Magnolia Room, guest
speaker Paul Harris, will talk about minorities in Germany.
* Feb. 13, at 7 p.m., in the University Center Theater, the film
?Journey of Hope? tells of the hardship suffered by a Turkish
farmer trying to escape to Switzerland.
* Feb. 18, at 7 p.m., in the University Center Theater, the film
?My Beautiful Launderette? is set in Great Britain and tells the
story of a partnership between two young men, one white and the
other Pakistani.
* March 4, at 7 p.m., in the University Center Magnolia Room, guest
speaker Don MacRaild, from the University of Northumbria,
Newcastle, England, will talk about minorities in Great
Britain.
* March 11, at 7 p.m., in the University Center Magnolia Room,
guest speaker Jakub Durr, Palacky University, Czech Republic, his
lecture will be titled ?The Roma in Central Europe.?
* April 2, at 7 p.m., in the University Center Theater, the musical
?Latcho Drom? tells the story of the historic odyssey of the
Gypsies from India to Egypt.
* April 8, at 7 p.m., in the University Center Magnolia Room, a
performance by the Gypsy music group ?Cilagos? from the Czech
Republic.
* April 22, at 7 p.m., in the University Center Magnolia Room,
guest speaker Olavi Arens, will talk about minorities in the Baltic
States.
