VSU physics students to celebrate Gravity Day

Valdosta State University's Society of Physics Students will sponsor Gravity Day on Tuesday, March 13, at 2 p.m.

Dr. Frank Flaherty, a professor in the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences, said Gravity Day is meant as a fun way for students to learn more about physics and gravity's role in our lives.

Physics students will stand on the roof of Nevins Hall and study the effects of gravity by launching objects towards a target on the ground. "We hope to use old fruit that supermarkets would otherwise throw away," Flaherty said. Student organizations, fraternities and sororities are encouraged to make papier-mache figures which will be launched at the target.

A food drive will also be part of the Gravity Day celebration. Students who attend the event are encouraged to donate canned goods. Those wishing to donate items for the food drive may also drop them off in room 3011 of Nevins Hall.

The public is invitied to attend and watch this event. For more information, contact the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences at 333-5665.
