No end to learning at VSU
Traditional students are not the only ones receiving an
education from Valdosta State University. More than 100 retirees in
Valdosta and surrounding counties continuously pursue their
education at VSU through Learning in Retirement (LIR).
LIR is an organization of retirement-age individuals designed to
meet the educational interests of it members. Members enroll in
classes dealing with a wide variety of topics, such as beginning
computers, flowering annuals and perennials for southern gardeners,
adult CPR, beginning bridge, and line dancing.Members may take as
many classes as they wish to take, and the enrollment fee is $30
for a three month term.
?LIR is an organization that allows retirement-age individuals to
continue learning while being an active part of what is going on at
VSU and Valdosta,? said Kathy Meadows, program coordinator for
Children, Seniors and Leisure Programs at VSU.
In the five years LIR has existed at VSU, enrollment in the
organization has increased from 30 members to more than 120
members. It is a member led organization. They determine the
curriculum for each term, manage the budget and develop social
programming.
Individuals interested in joining LIR may still register for the
Winter term, consisting of 26 courses currently in progress. To
register, contact Kathy Meadows at (229) 245-6484. For more
