Economists conduct research, collect and analyze economic data, monitor and write about trends in the economy and predict future trends. They study the production and distribution of goods, resources and services within society. The economics major at Valdosta State University prepares students for a variety of careers in government and in the private sector. Economics majors may also choose to pursue graduate studies in areas such as law, business, urban planning, journalism and more.

The Valdosta State Difference

Students have access to the college’s state-of-the-art facilities, including multimedia classrooms and a student computer lab. Economics students can gain invaluable work experience by participating in the Valdosta State Co-op Program and Students in Free Enterprise, a nationally recognized, award-winning organization. Top students may be invited to participate in Beta Gamma Sigma, an honor society for the top 10 percent of junior and senior business students.

What You'll Learn

Students in the economics program gain an understanding of the economic processes that provide the foundation for business, political and social behavior. Students learn about macroeconomic and microeconomic concepts, develop quantitative skills to solve economic problems, and hone their ability to make predictions and formulate economic forecasts. The program stresses the importance of critical thinking skills, effective oral and written communication, and the application of knowledge to solve business problems.
