The College of the Arts at Valdosta State University includes the Department of Art & Design, the Department of Communication Arts, and the Department of Music. This organization of the disciplines of the performing arts, communication arts, and visual arts into one academic unit is unique in the University System of Georgia and reflects a traditional and continuing commitment by Valdosta State University to provide cultural enrichment in the lives of the students and other citizens of Georgia. The College of the Arts maintains a calendar of performing arts, visual arts, VSU-TV/television, WVVS 90.9 GPB radio programming, and other arts activities that are available to students, faculty and the general public.

In addition, many of the performances and exhibitions created by the College of the Arts are presented off-campus in schools and communities of the region. Every Valdosta State University student is invited to explore membership in performance activities such as band, theatre, and other student organizations associated with the academic departments of the College and to enroll in courses, regardless of major.

Valdosta State University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and of the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Also in the College of the Arts, programs in music are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Teacher preparation programs at Valdosta State University meet Georgia certification requirements of the Professional Standards Commission and are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. Within the Communication degree, the Public Relations program is certified by the Public Relations Society of America.

The Dean's Office is located on the second floor in the Fine Arts Building (FA2004) at the corner of Oak Street and Brookwood on the south side of VSU's main campus.

Mission Statement

The Valdosta State University College of the Arts provides a student-centered educational experience that emphasizes creativity, innovation, and effective communication. The College’s degree programs prepare graduates to become professionals and scholars in the visual, musical, theatrical, dance, media, and communications fields who are able to think critically and creatively.  The College supports the mission of the University by serving as a center of cultural development for the campus, community, and region.

In support of our mission, the VSU College of the Arts:

  • encourages creative interdisciplinary scholarly production and critical reflection;
  • supports an environment that encourages alternative ways of observing our world, communicating ideas, and utilizing various media;
  • produces a robust performance, exhibition, and presentation season from all disciplines for local, regional, and national audiences;
  • builds relationships with internal and external communities supporting leadership opportunities, service learning, and internships.
