Exercise is Medicine Symposium Returns to VSU April 23

VALDOSTA – Valdosta State University’s Exercise Physiology Club will host the fourth annual Exercise is Medicine Symposium from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, in the Health Sciences and Business Administration Building Auditorium. This event is open to anyone interested in learning more about the benefits of exercise and its inclusion in patient treatment plans.

Registration is $35 and includes one nursing continuing education unit of credit. Community members who wish to participate can register at a discounted rate of $25. The deadline for early registration is April 20 and includes a T-shirt. Registration on the day of the event is an additional $5 and T-shirts are not guaranteed.

The Exercise is Medicine Symposium will feature a panel of health care providers sharing their thoughts on the applications of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of disease. They are Dr. Ben Hogan, chief of family medicine at South Georgia Medical Center, assistant medical director at Langdale Hospice House, and team physician for the Valdosta City School System and student athletes at VSU; Dr. Arjun Mittra, fellow in hematology and oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.; Megan McLeod, dietetic intern and graduate student at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla.; Lisa K. Weldon, a VSU alumna and adult nurse practitioner of medical oncology for the Pearlman Comprehensive Cancer Center at South Georgia Medical Center; and Dr. Michael Webster, associate professor of exercise physiology in VSU’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Morning refreshments will be served. A tour of VSU’s new, state-of-the-art Center for Exercise Medicine and Rehabilitation will take place after the panel discussion.

Sponsorship opportunities for the event are available. All sponsors will have the name of their company printed on the Exercise is Medicine T-shirt. Sponsors who donate $250 or more will be provided table space to market their business and have their name and company logo featured on a slideshow that will be displayed throughout the event.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Exercise Physiology Program and the Athletic Training Program at VSU.
